This is the first strategy-related thing I’ve read that actually made me feel seen - yes, yes, yes! My own career has been a real mix of roles. I’ve done everything from ghostwriting to systems design to documentary filmmaking, and it’s given me both some incredible stories and character development and the confidence to reimagine and go beyond the brief. Every single client of mine has said they were initially sceptical about hiring someone with “no direction” - I quickly corrected this thinking - and now they couldn’t be happier with the results. Great to see some of other kin out there ❤️ Variety is the spice of life!
Love this - especially the tension you reference between categorisation v constellations. I've been thinking similarly about CVs. Their linear nature quite literally boxes out a person who not only has the breadth of experience, but also whose curiosity always leads them to dig deep.
It's so funny you mention PE -- the conversations I've found myself in recently suggest it's a very natural home for me once I age out of agency life. Find the right cashed up folks with the hardcore business nous, and help them think through the why of their bundling up.
Thanks for this, loved Range and love thinking through the implications for what we do.
